I am amazed at how many business books are out there dealing with the need for leadership development. I am also quite impressed with what many of these books have to say on the subject. So, this short, little take on the issue will not be as detailed or as well-thought out as the “experts,” but I thought I would at least throw some questions out there. I hope this helps a few of you.
One thing that I suggest when it comes to leadership development is that we all should make sure that we are being trained by someone who is actually an experienced leader – someone who has been leading groups of people and organizations successfully for a long time. Some people have proclaimed themselves as leaders even though they are new to the scene but they have no real record of successful leadership. Even some of those authors out on the bookshelves are coming from theory and don’t have the real-world experience. They write books and some people think that this legitimizes them as a developer. Sometimes this is just not the case. We need to do our due diligence to find developers who can really help us figure out how to grow in our own leadership. This can take some work on our parts, but I am positive that it is worth it.
Another thing that I suggest when it comes to our own leadership development is that we not only read books, but that we both go to leadership conferences and workshops where we are allowed to interact with one another. We all something to offer in this area and to be able to share those things would be invaluable. As well, we would have access to “experts” who might be able to keep us on point and help us design a way to be better leaders. I know one leadership coach who is great at making this happen. His name is Dr. Andy Neillie and even though he is world-renowned and speaks to Fortune 500 and Fortune 50 companies, he is so accessible and humble that everyone can glean from him.
Finally, I want to recommend that everyone find a personal leadership coach or a leadership mentor – someone who is available to you as you strive to become the best leader that you can be. One on one discussions and guidance are super important to our growth. Take your time finding this person. They will help you immensely.
